Summary

Subject is read with the purpose to understand the basic regularities and processes proceeding at steel casting, solidification and crystallization of steel (by the help of practical exercises), the conditions of homogenous and heterogeneous nucleation of crystals, the micro-segregate and macro-segregate processes, the defects of ingots and continuously cast blanks, the theoretical and technological aspects at steel casting into the ingot moulds as well as on the continuous casting machine.

Subject syllabus:

1. Equipment of cast houses. Classification of steels by degree of deoxidation, killed steel, semi- killed steel and rimming steel. 2. Refractory materials used at casting of steel, material properties. Possibilities of evaluation of properties and resistance of refractory materials to molten metals and slags. 3. Casting of steels into ingot-moulds, top pouring, uphill casting. Behaviour of steel in a ladle. 4. Crystallisation of steel. Solidification of steel, regularities, solidification of the ingot crop end. 5. Structure of ingots made of killed and rimming steel. 6. Numerical simulation of ingot's solidification (utilization of ProCAST software - influence of various factors on the solidification process and segregations). 7. Micro-segregation, macro-segregation. 8. Ingots defects of killed and rimmed steel. 9. Casting of large ingots. Cleanness and quality of the ingots, defects. Process VIC (Vítkovice Ingot Casting). 10. Continuous casting of steel, division, benefits, disadvantages, economy. 11. Design of CCM equipment. Classification of CCM, vertical, horizontal. 12. Primary, secondary and tertiary cooling zone. Solidification of steel in mould, influencing factors. 13. Tundish metallurgy. Defects of continuously cast blanks. 14. Perspectives, new directions at casting of thin blanks.
