to interpret results of simulation programmes of foundry processes;
to know the principles of economical casting design;
to know the means of computer support of foundry technologies;
to analyse the casting design feasibility.

Summary
Principles in the design of castings. Requirements for the optimum design.
Proposals of castings. The computer’s simulation of metal feeding into foundry
moulds, solidification and cooling-down of castings, examination of structure
and prediction of the mechanical properties.

Subject syllabus:
1. Role and status of operation scheduling of technology in the foundry.
2. Manufacturing process documentation of casting.
3. Internal holes and passageways of a casting. Core and mould allowance and tolerancy.
4. Clamping and weighting of moulds. Venting system of gases
5. Principles of pattern manufacturing.
6. Computer aids of foundry technology. Rapid prototyping methods.
7. Casting process simulation software.
8. General approach to correct casting design.
9. Feasibility study of casting design. Cooperation between foundryman and designer.
10. Cost-effective casting design for mould and core manufacturing operations.
11. Cost-effective casting design for directional solidification, feeding and metal contraction.
12. Cost-effective casting design for casting cleaning and finishing operations.
13. Economic consideration about cost reduction of casting.
14. Casting quality and production costs.
