Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student will able: to know the rules for using quartz and non-quartz base sands; to know processes of the cooling effect control of a foundry mould; to explain kinds and importance of base sands surfaces and principles of their measurements; to know types and means for reclamation of foundry base sands; to analyze physical and chemical nature of binding property and strength of moulding mixtures; to explain principles of classification of binder systems of the Ist up to IVth generation; to design a binder system for the given technological process of casting manufacture; to explain physical principles of binding the mixtures of the IIIrd generation; to describe chemical hardening processes of inorganic and organic binders (condensation, polymerization, addition, copolymerization).

Summary

The subject is focused on the area - opening materials of the sand mixtures, quartz and non-silica opening materials, granulometric composition, activation of the opening materials, regeneration. The bonding-agent systems I. to IV., generation, chemical treatment in preparation of moulds and cores. Mixtures with alkaline silicates, application of macromolecular chemistry in the bonding-agent systems. The principles of physical bonding, the V-method, the EFF-SET process. The interaction of mould vers. Metal, defects in castings – effect of mould and of cores. The gaseous regime of a foundry mould, burning-in of castings. The lustrous carbon and its role at formation of the surface of a casting.
