Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Acquired knowledge - student will be able to characterize the basic technology of casting into a permanent or disposable molds; - student will be able to formulate the basic physico-chemical processes during forming a casting, from pouring it up to metal cooling; Acquired skills -- student will be able to use his knowledge to decide on the use of appropriate technological process for a given type of casting; - student will be able to apply his theoretical knowledge to modify the proposed technology of molding and casting, with regard to material and type of casting

Summary

Basic theoretical analysis used foundry technology, overview of traditional and advanced technologies, including the progress of the operations in the production of castings from drawing to delivery.

Subject syllabus:

1. Foundry industry in the Czech republic and in the world, statistics, possibilities and limits of casting production. Procedure of casting production from a design to the dispatch department 2. Applied processes and techniques in foundries. Production of castings using lost sand mold, mechanized mold making and core making- sqeezing, jolting, impact molding,blasting, shooting 3. Molding materials, sand, binders, mold and core making technologies, molding mixtures making and testing, sand reclamation techniques 4. Production of castings using permanent metal molds – gravity die casting, high pressure die casting, low pressure die casting, centrifugal casting 5. Melt flow in molds,properties of molten metals, castability , influencies on the fluidity of metals and alloys. Running systém design 6. Static and dynamic action of melted metals on the mold, upward metalostatic pressure calculation. Gases in melted metals, their dissolubility, methods of the melt degasing. Gases in the mold, methods of the mold degasing. Blow hole formation. 7. Thermodynamic of the crystalisation, homogeneus and heterogeneus nucleation. Primary crystalisation of the casting. Casting solidification – calculation of total solidification time, solidification velocity.Tthermal diffusivity of the mold. 8. Solidification shrinkage , hot spots and their elimination – casting design rules, feeding (risers), chilling. 9. Calculation of the riser volume, riser modul,types of risers, intensification of the riser efficiency. 10. Consequences of the solid shrinkage – thermal, transformation, residual stresses. Tears and hot tears. Basic casting defects and their prevention. 11. Cast steels, standarts, properties, metalurgy, casting rules 12. Cast irons and their classification by grafite shape – lamellar grafite část irons, sferoidal grafite část irons, basic properties, metalurgy 13. Metallurgy, casting and properties of část Al, Mg, Zn,Cu, Ti alloys 14. Visit of a foundry and its basic technologies – pattern making, mold making, core making,melting, casting, sheaking- out, refinning.
