Summary

The subject is aimed at technologies of castings manufacture with the aid of modern and untraditional methods. It deals with classification of individual methods according to the casting process and the used mould type. It is an intention to acquaint students with all technologies of castings manufacture, i.e. even with that ones that are not met in the Czech Republic territory. The student will be also acquainted with technologies of casting manufacture that are used in a limited range only or for special purposes only.

Subject syllabus:

1. Summary of basic casting methods in the world. A brief analysis of casting manufacturing methods used in the Czech Republic – examples from the nearest neighbourhood. 2. Technology of gravity casting in permanent moulds. Inclined casting. Manufacture of permanent moulds. Checking of the melt and monitoring of important process parameters. Control of the mould thermal regime. 3. Bases of casting technology with utilization of centrifugal forces. Division of centrifugal casting. Manufacture of castings by the TEK-CAST technology. Excursions with practical show of the total manufacturing process of castings from ferrous and non-ferrous alloys by centrifugal casting in metal moulds. 4. Equipment for manufacture of castings by low pressure casting process. Design of the gating system, material filtration and thermal regime of the mould. Definition and analysis of specific casting defects. Possibilities of using the waste moulds and cores. Practical show of low pressure casting technology in a foundry plant. 5. Manufacture of castings by pressure casting technology. Choice and use of materials for castings and mould making. Design of metal moulds. Design of the gas regime of moulds – venting. Typical defects. 6. Methods eliminating the deficiencies of pressure casting process – vacuuming of moulds, utilization of the local and total squeeze casting. The semi-solid metalcasting technology. Possibilities of casting in a liquid-solid state. Advantages and disadvantages of these technologies. 7. Technology of castings manufacture with use of investment patterns. A complete technological process of castings manufacture. Manufacture of wax patterns, ceramic shell moulds and casting in laboratory conditions. 8. Utilization of a physical principle of binding and moulds manufacture. The use of magnetic field and vacuum for casting manufacture. The EFF-SET technology – freezing of moulds, method, suitable materials. Casting on evaporating pattern. Manufacture of investment castings in practice with the aid of combustible or evaporating patterns. 9. New trends of castings production in world with the aid of unconventional methods. Manufacture of castings from special alloys (Mg and Ti alloys). Melting and casting in vacuum.
