Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

- to define the thermodynamic quantities and laws of thermodynamics - to describe the chemical equilibrium – to monitor the dependence of the equilibrium constant on state variables (dependence on temperature, dependence on pressure) - to describe the phase equilibrium - Gibbs phase rule, phase equilibria of pure substances and binary liquid systems - to define and utilize basic terms of chemical kinetics - rate of chemical reaction, kinetic equation, order of reaction, rate constant - to describe basic processes of heterogeneous reactions – diffusion, adsorption; to determine the rate-limiting process for heterogeneous processes - to apply gained theoretical knowledge in the field of material preparation in electrical engineering.

Subject syllabus:

Signification of physical chemistry in electrotechnics and electronics. Thermodynamic state function for gases. Fugacity. Real gases. Heat capacities of substances, variation of heat capacities with temperature. Thermodynamic laws, theoretical calculation of reaction heat (enthalpy), variation of reaction enthalpy with temperature. Thermodynamic potentials, Gibbs-Helmholtz equations, chemical potential. Chemical equilibria: homogeneous, heterogeneous, equilibrium constants. Calculation of equilibrium composition. Phase equilibria, Gibbs phase rule, classification of systems. Thermodynamic of liquid solutions, Raoult’s law and Henry’s law. Real solutions, activity and activity coefficient. . Thermodynamic functions and models of solutions. Vaporization and distillation. Application of solutions theory on metal alloys. Structure and properties of liquid metals, melting, vaporization, surface tension, viscosity. Crystallisation. Homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation. Distribution coefficients. Segregation process, crystallization, process modelling. Chemical kinetics: rate of chemical reaction, order of reaction, molecularity and reaction mechanism. Theory of chemical kinetics. Elementary steps in heterogenous reactions. Diffusion mechanism and mathematical description, molecular, molecular, convection and turbulent diffusion. Diffusion and chemical reaction, diffusion limited reactions, external and internal diffusion, diffusion through phase interface. Surface phenomena and kinetics of reactions. Surface properties of solid components. Physical adsorption and chemisorption. Adsorption isotherms. Gas adsorption kinetics. Surface properties of solutions, application of surface phenomena. Kinetics of topochemical reactions. Autocatalytic reactions. Industry application of heterogeneous kinetics.
