Subject syllabus:

Terminology in chemical kinetics. Ways of describing kinetic dependencies (homogeneous, heterogeneous, elementary, simultaneous reactions). Reaction mechanism of non-elementary chemical reactions, methods of determining reaction order. Selected factors that affect reaction rate. Theory of reaction rate. Kinetics of heterogeneous reactions, fundamental steps. Mechanisms and mathematics of diffusion - molecular, convective and turbulent diffusion. Fick's laws, diffusion flow. Basic concepts of reactions affected by external and internal diffusion. Processes with successive and simultaneous elements, diffusion and chemical resistance. Heterogeneous processes controlled by diffusion. Surface phenomena and surface properties of solids. Influence of electron structure of metals on their adsorption properties, adsorption on semiconductors and insulators. Adsorption from the gas phase and solution at solid phase interface. Adsorption isotherms, influence of temperature and pressure on adsorption-desorption processes. Examples of surface processes application. First-order kinetics of heterogeneous processes - melting, evaporation, sublimation, solidification (crystallization), condensation, polymorphic transformations. Examples of second and higher - order kinetics. Principles of catalysis, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Intermediate steps and kinetics of homogeneous catalytic reactions. Acid-base catalysis. Kinetics and basic concepts on mechanisms of heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Catalysis on metals and non-metals. Kinetics and mechanism of reactions of gaseous components catalysed by a solid catalyst. Theory of catalyst selection. Industrial applications of heterogeneous catalysis.
