Student will be able: - to define influences affecting foundry processes; - to describe basic processes during forming a casting from pouring it up to metal cooling; - to calculate the gating system; - to calculate the risers; - to explain the conception of controlled solidification.

Summary

Structure and physical properties of molten metals. The principles of metal flowing, pressure conditions in gatings. The running property of liquid metals and alloys and their coherence with the design of castings. The thermal and physical processes in a casting and in a mould. Interaction between casting and mould. Crystallization and solidification of castings.

Subject syllabus:

1. Physical properties of molten metals and alloys. 2. Fluidity and castability of molten metal. 3. Flow dynamics of molten metal. 4. Gating system design. 5. Gases in metal and their transport in mould cavity. 6. Crystallization. Nucleation. Dendritic growth. 7. Solidification (freezing) of casting. Thermal axis. 8. Solidification contraction and shrinkage formation. 9. Hot spots. Chills. Feeding distance. 10. Risering (feeding) . Progressive and directional solidification. 11. Solid contraction. 12. Contraction stress. Hot tearing. 13. Properties of metals at high temperature (near solidus). 14. Thermal stress, Residual stress. Cold cracking. Practice: 1st Opening exercises, lab work Poruba, EKF, security training. 2nd Differential thermal analysis (measure T for Exercise 7). 3rd The viscosity of molten metals and alloys. The surface tension of metals and alloys. 4th Cooling curves of metal (pure metal, alloy, measuring T for Exercise 7). 5th Fluidity I. (temperature effect - one alloy). 6th Fluidity II. (alloy of impact - constant overheating). 7th Fluidity III. (forms of influence - one alloy). 8th Gating system I (calculations, discharge from the pan, lift). 9th Feeding System II. (modeling the AFS - μ). 10th Gating system III. (calculations). 11th The temperature field of casting I (JBS - condensation zone). 12th The temperature field of casting II. (chromite + water glass (SiO2)). 13th Crystallization - a film on the etched samples dendritic structure. 14th Credits.
