Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student will be able: -to define influences affecting foundry processes; -to describe basic processes during forming a casting from pouring it up to metal cooling; -to know the method of calculating the gating system; -to know the method of calculating the risers; -to explain the conception of controlled solidification. -to know the rules for obtaining good casting with no defects; -to apply the metal filtration aids during pouring and feeding of metal during solidification; -to solve the degasification and venting of a foundry mould.

Summary

Structure and physical properties of molten metals. The principles of metal flowing, pressure conditions in gatings. The running property of liquid metals and alloys and their coherence with the design of castings. The thermal and physical processes in a casting and in a mould. Interaction between casting and mould. Crystallization and solidification of castings. The thermodynamic conditions of crystallization. Shrinkage and drawing-off metals and alloys, the solidifying and solid state. Segregation-liquation in castings, the chemical non-homogeneity of castings. Stress in a casting, shrinking stress, internal thermal stress, phase stress, elastic and plastic state of material. The physical conditions of initiation of fissures and cracks in castings. Application of the acoustic emission on the state of stress at solidification, at cooling-down and at heat treatment of a casting. The computer’s simulation of solidification and of stress in a casting.
