Basic characteristic of ceramic materials, raw materials base for its production. Definition, description, properties and dividing of ceramic mass. Production of ceramics materials, definition fundamental manufacturing processes. Use of ceramic materials in practice.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: Characteristics and extent of the field. Definition and distribution of ceramic materials - construction, kitchenware, ceramic hiteware, refractories and special ceramics. Basic substances in ceramic technology, their thermal behavior: oxides, carbonates, clay materials, feldspar, sulfates. Grain materials, finish, granulometry composition of raw mixtures. Distribution of water in ceramic mixtures, rheological properties of systems. Basic procedures in forming ceramics. Drying, drying characteristics, drier. The firing of ceramic products, changes in structure and phase composition during firing, types of kilns inceramic industry. Classic ceramic materials based on clay, the common features of the production. The main types of refractory materials by chemical and phase composition. Basic functional properties of refractories materials. Aluminosilicate refractories. Basic refractory materials. Heat-insulating ceramic materials. Castables. Application of refractory materials in the industry. Exercises Determination of density, green density, porosity Grain size distribution - sieve analysis Grain size distribution – Andreasen method Determination of specific surface Rheology of ceramic pastes Determination of length changes of ceramic materials during drying process Rheology of ceramic suspensions
