To improve students' knowledge acquired in previous studies in the field of waste management. Emphasis is placed on learning the issues of waste management in all its range, including environmental and economic impacts.

Summary

The subject covers various methods of material and energy waste recovery and also methods of their disposal/removal. The individual themes are, in agreement with the supervisor, developed in detail by the specific focus of doctoral dissertation.

Subject syllabus:

Definition, classification and waste generation. The basic legislative directives in the field of waste management. Municipal wastes, their generation and processing options. Industrial wastes generated in various industries. Material recovery of wastes (recycling, regeneration, composting). Energy recovery of wastes (incineration, pyrolysis, gasification). The basic technological aspects of thermal processes. Anaerobic waste treatment, formation of biogas, cogeneration.Waste disposal/removal. Landfilling of waste, landfill technology, classification and security of landfills, landfill gas and its energy use. Waste incineration without recovery, or using low heat. Plasma waste treatment methods.Physical and physico-chemical waste processing.
