- student will be able to characterize ceramic materials on the basis of their properties - student will be able to assess properties of ceramic materials in term of their composition and structure - student will be able to predict lifetime of ceramic materials depending on their parameters and the method of their application - student will be able to consider possibility of application of ceramic materials in practice - student will be able to determine parameters of ceramic materials

Summary

The aim of the course is to provide students a deeper theoretical knowledge in the field of determination and evaluation of properties of ceramic materials in relation to their application. To introduce students with properties of raw materials for glass and ceramic manufacturing.

Subject syllabus:

1. Density, bulk density, expression of compactness criteria, absorption, apparent and true porosity of ceramic materials. 2. Methods of determination of material porosity. Method of Hg penetration, dividing of pore size. Determination of gas permeability. 3. Description of raw material granulometry. Sieve analyse, particle counters, sorters. Rules for use the individual methods for describing of granulometry. 4. Determination of specific area of powder substances. Method of law temperature adsorption of nitrogen (BET method), method o fair permeability for determination of specific surface. 5. Mechanical properties of ceramic materials. Relationship between structure of material and theoretical strength. Compressive, tensile, flexural and flexural impact strength. 6. Determination of material strength in cross tensile. Methods for determination of mechanical properties for specific type of ceramic materials. Non-destructive ultrasound methods for control of mechanical parameters. 7. Youngs modulus of elasticity. Determination of Youngs modulus of elasticity by static and dynamic methods. Hardness and micro hardness of ceramic materials. Determination of abrasion resistance. 8. Thermal properties of ceramic materials. Effective coefficient of thermal conductivity. Emissivity of ceramic materials. 9. Methods of determination coefficient of thermal conductivity. Method of heated wire. Methods of determination coefficient of temperature conductivity. 10. Thermal expansion (linear and volume), methods of determination thermal expansion. Measuring at hot-stage microscope. Additional length changes of ceramic materials. 11. Thermal shock resistance of materials. Refractoriness of ceramic materials. 12. Thermo-mechanical properties of refractory materials, reology of refractory materials at high temperature. Determination of values of refractoriness under load and creepu at pressure. 13. Reological properties of ceramic paste and slurries, measuring of viscosity of melting glass. 14. Methods of determination properties unshaped materials, preparation of testing bodies from unshaped ceramic materials. Evaluation of parameters of ceramic products with carbon content.
