Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
The students gain the basic knowledge of corrosion of metals and alloys. They will understand economical aspects of corrossion, they can describe the main relation among composition, structure and corrosion properties of metals. They can clarify the main corrosion types and corrosion protection methods. They will realised some simple laboratory corrosion tests. The knowledges will be appied in the related and/or following subjects in technical service.

Summary
This subject contains study and evaluation of corrosion properties of metal
materials and products, including their corrosion protection. In this subject
are lectured and trained the basic knowledge of electrochemical corrosion - the
conditions, reactions and main types of corrosion. The lectures contain: the
information on economical loses and ecological problems of metal corrosion,
determination and calculation of corrosion rates, galvanic metal layers,
thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical corrosion at elevated temperatures,
localized corrosion types (pitting, crevice, intergranular corrosion, stress
corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue). The corrosion protection methods are
introduced: material design, coatings and layers, solution treatment, cathodic
protection and convenient construction design. The subject also includes the
standard exposition and electrochemical corrosion tests of metals and coating,
as well as testing and monitoring of metallic materials in the service and/or
natural conditions, especially in atmospheric environment. Examples of
corrosion failure cases in service are completed, including their and analysis
and solutions.
