Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

- Define current trends on the development of new materials and their production technologies. - Characterize the basic requirements for the new types of technical ceramics, and their mechanical properties. - Identify the causes of brittleness on ceramics and describe the principle of their densification. - Define the CVD and OVD methods. - Describe composite materials, characterize particle and fiber composites. - Define the classification of polymers, their processes, structures and degradation effects.

Summary

Directions of the development of new materials and special technologies. Technical ceramics, brittleness factors, principles of toughness. Plastic materials, degradation phenomena. Surface coatings, CVD, PVD. Composite materials. Characteristics of ceramics and its mechanical and physical properties. The structural parameters. Technical ceramics, and application requirements. Preparation and evaluation of synthetic powders. The causes of brittleness, densification principles. Technological preparation procedures. CVD and PVD methods. Composite (composite materials), particle and fiber composites, properties, compared with metallic materials. Polymeric materials, historical aspects, classification and characterization of polymeric materials. Rubbers and their distribution, synthetic rubbers. Phenomenological viscoelastic foundations. Degradation efects in polymeric materials.

Subject syllabus:

LECTURES : - Current trends in the development of new materials and technologies. - Ceramic materials, properties, structural characteristics, basic requirements for new types of technical ceramics, basic technological characteristics. Ceramic subdivision. - The causes of ceramic brittleness, principal and secondary causes. - Principles of suppression, crack propagation in ceramic materials (densification), optimization of the structure, phase transformation. - The structure and strengthening mechanisms of ceramic materials, analysis of defects inducing the breach of ceramic materials. - Ceramics based on silicon. - Evaluation of the mechanical properties of ceramic materials under different loading methods. - Experimental techniques of ceramic materials. - Surface layers, deposition methods, CVD, PVD. - Composite materials (composites), distribution, properties, particle and fiber composites. Ceramic matrix composites. - Polymer materials. The historical aspects, classification and characterization of polymeric materials. - Classification of rubber, natural rubber, synthetic. - Phenomenological foundations of viscosity. - Degradation of polymer materials. EXERCISE: - Introduction exercises. - An overview of advanced structural materials. - Evaluation of fracture toughness of unconventional materials. - Material properties of ceramic materials cuts. - Evaluation of fracture toughness of oxide ceramics with indentation technique. - Evaluation of fracture toughness of nitride ceramics with indentation technique. - Evaluation of the response of oxide and nitride ceramics with indentation technique for repeated loading. - Composite (compound) materials. Preparation and evaluation of different types of structures on composite materials. - Degradation efects and stress-deforming behavior of composite materials. - Plastics. Evaluation of mechanical properties. - Control test. - Credit count.
