Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

- Outline the internal structure of structural materials on different scale ranges; - Describe the basic properties of structural materials; - Clarify relationships between internal structure and properties of structural materials; - Describe principal characteristics, advantages and drawbacks, of four groups of structural materials – metallic materials, polymers, ceramics and composites; - Compare advantages and disadvantages of each group of structural materials.

Materials in the human civilisation evolution; basic classification of materials; natural materials; metals and their alloys; ceramic materials; polymer materials; composites; examples of materials used in selected branches - medicine, sports, transport, building industry etc.

Lectures: 1. Role of the materials in human civilisation evolution 2. Basic classification of materials – natural, technical – structural, functional – examples. 3. Properties of materials - classification, examples from various branches. 4. Internal structure of materials. 5. Principal methods of materials testing – structure, properties. 6. Metals and alloys – classification, principal properties, examples. 7. Ceramic materials - classification, principal properties, examples. 8. Polymers and composites - classification, principal properties, examples. 9. Examples of materials used in medicine. 10. Examples of materials used in sports.
