Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

- Define the meaning of investigations on structure and properties of technical materials; - Characterise crystal structure of metals and their alloys, define defects in crystals; - Describe fundamental mechanical tests; - Define basic technological tests; - Describe basic types of equilibrium binary phase diagrams; - Characterise binary diagrams in Fe-C system and classify iron based alloys; - Outline principles of heat treatment of metals and alloys; - Characterise important non-ferrous metals and their alloys; - Characterise polymers and structural ceramics.

Summary

The course is dealing with elementary principles of technical materials, eapecially metallic materials. The main topics of the course are: crystalline materials, solidification of pure metals and alloys, equilibrium binary diagrams, classification of iron based alloys and heat treatment of alloys. Furthermore, attention is paid to advanced materials, e.g. technical ceramics, metallic glass, polymers and composites.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures - Contents and aim of subject. - Crystallographic grounds. Faults if crystallographic lattice. Outward forces effect on crystallographic structure of metals\. elastic and plastic deformation. - Tests of mechanical properties of metals: tensile test, strength test in pressure, bend, shear and torsion. - Static mechanical tests at higher temperatures: creep tests, relaxation tests. - Impact tests in bend, fracture toughness, fatigue tests, hardness meassurement. - Technological tests. Nondestructive metal tests. Microscopy. - Thermodynamic graounds, steady phase diagrams of binary systems. Metals and alloys crystallisation. - Thermally activated processes: diffusion mechanisms in solid matters, recrystallisation, fracture behaviour of metallic materials. - Phase transformations in solid state. Heat treatment principles of metals and alloys. - Steady Fe-C diagram. Classification of alloys of the iron basis. Alloyed and accopanying elements in steels. - Rolled structural and tool steels. - Technology of steels heat treatment. Transformation diagrams of over cooled austenite. Chemical-heat treatment of steels. - Steels for castings. Iron-casts. Heat treatment od iron cast. - Technically important nonferous metals and their alloys. - Polymerous materials. Structural ceramic. Metallic glasses. Composite materials. Seminar: 1. Seminar introduction, safety of work in laboratories, literature. 2. Geometry of crystals, program No. 1. 3. Working-out and submission if the program No. 1. 4. Hook´s low, the yield point Rp0.2 determination: program No. 2. 5. Testing test and the raoture toughness test: program No. 2. 6. Indentation hardness tests and chosen technological examinations. 7. Test - crystallography and metals testing. 8. Practical metallography: grinding preparation, etching of structures. 9. Practise of steady phase diagrams of binar systems, program No. 3. 10. Finishing and submitting of the program No. 3. 11. Praktise of Fe-C diagram, including steady microstructure, program No. 4. 12. Finishing and submitting of the program No. 4. 13. Steels hardenability. 14. Test from metallography and steady Fe-C diagram, credit.
