Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
- classify various carbon steel types, including their application;
- recommend suitable processing and treat for controlled austenite transformation products;
- suggest various steel types for automotive industry including high manganese alloys being suitable for
application in cryogen conditions and for rotating components;
- decide about martensitic toughened steels, spring steels, steel having high abrasion resistance for
defined technical application;
- choose suitable steel type for low temperatures;
- formulate principles of corrosion, heat and fire-resistance metal materials, of steels with specific physical
or magnetic properties;
- compare basic cast steels types;
- evaluate using suitability of nonferrous alloys and/or metals with high melting temperature.

Summary
The material selection according the application, operating security and reliability evaluation. Evaluation of materials resistance against cleavage rapture. Structural steels for welded constructions, steels with higher yield strength, steels resistant against hydrogen embrittlement, materials for automotive industry, materials for hydrogen storage including structural metallurgical characteristics. Principles of corrosion resistance and heat-resistance, anti-corrosion and heat-resistant materials including the structural-metallurgical characteristics. Principles of creep. Creep materials and practical applications. High strength and harden-able steels. Technically important non-ferrous metals, structure and its relation to properties, practical applications.

Lectures:
- Austenite transformation products (reconstructive and displacive transformation), their mutual relationships and possibilities of controlling - part 1.
- Austenite transformation products (reconstructive and displacive transformation), their mutual relationships and possibilities of controlling - part 2.
- Steels for automotive industry (IF, DP, HSLA, BS, TRIP, multiphase steels) - their properties and treatment principles.
- High manganese materials (the TWIP and TRIPLEX alloys), including the hadfield´s steel, their physical-metallurgical principles, properties and application.
- Martensite hardened materials (Maraging) - properties, principles of treatment and application.
- Corrosion resistant steels - ferrite, austentie, duplex, martensite and dispersively hardened steels. Their physical metallurgical principles, properties, treatment principles and application.
- Carbon heat-resistant steels, low and high alloyed heat-resistant steels, their treatment and apllication possibilities.
- Ni - alloys of Monel type, alloys with specif physical properties and high strength alloys. Hardening of the Ni-alloys, phases stability detected in superalloys, modification of the grain boundaries properties, treatment of given alloys and application.

- Phase and structural composition of steels and iron-steels.
- Quantitative evaluation by use of basic stereological methods. Evaluation of cleanness, grain size and percentage part of presented phases in chosen steel types.
- Éffwct of harmful elements, quantitative evaluation, microfractographic characteristics including evaluation of real fracture surfaces and microstructures.
- Structure and properties of chosen structural and alloyed steels. Using the IRA and ARA diagrams.
- Microstructure study of upper bainite in comparison with acicular ferrite, granular bainite and high manganese materials.
- Microalloyed and low alloyed steels, unconventionally treated materials.
- Evaluation of chosen steel types using the SCAN and EDAX.
- Test.
- High alloyed special steels. Microstructure and properties of anticorrosive steels (martensite, duplex, austenite and ferrite steels).
- Manganese, heat-resistant and fire-resistant steels.
- Properties and structures of chosen alloy types (Cu, Al, Mg-alloys).
- Properties and structures of chosen alloy types (Ni and Ti-alloys).
