Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

- Outline the internal structure of structural materials on different scale ranges; - Classify the basic properties of structural materials; - Formulate relationships between internal structure and properties of structural materials; - Describe principal characteristics, advantages and drawbacks, of four groups of structural materials – metallic materials, polymers, ceramics and composites; - Illustrate advantages and disadvantages of each group of structural materials.

Development of new materials and special technologies. Material resistance against brittle fracture - principles of fracture mechanics. Safety and reliability of structural materials. Structural steels with higher mechanical properties. Stainless and refractory materials. Creep resisting materials. Tool materials. Non-ferrous metals. Metal glass. Engineering ceramics. Composite materials. Surface coatings, CVD, PVD.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: - Survey of engineering materials; their applicability in various industrial branches. - Resistance of materials to brittle failure; principal mechanisms of materials strengthening. - Structural steels for use at normal and lower temperatures; steels for welded structures. - Steels for quenching and tempering; corrosion resistant steels; creep resistant steels. - Tool materials; tool steels; sintered carbides; ceramic tools. - Important non-ferrous metals. Aluminium and its alloys; copper and its alloys; nickel and its alloys; titanium and its alloys. - Ceramic materials – classifications, structure, properties. - Polymers – principal categories; structure, properties. - Composite materials – principal kinds, properties. - Surface layers.
