Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

- Familiarization with new materials and advanced technologies of their production. - Clarify the principles of rapid solidification and conditions of metal glasses origin. - Define technical ceramics, coutings, CVD and PVD methods. - Analyzing materials based on Ni for high temperature works. - Characterize nanocrystalline materials. - Clarify historic aspects, classification and characteristics of polymeric materials, production, testing and degradation.

Summary

Selected advanced materials and manufacturing technology. The principles of rapid solidification, structural changes, conditions of origin of metallic glasses, types and properties, devitrification. Ceramic materials, properties, requirements for technical ceramics. Brittleness, densification principles. Coating, an overview of types of coatings according to the properties requests. CVD, PVD methods. Materials based on Ni for high-temperature works, Inconelsuperalloys, structural characteristics, hardening. Nanocrystalline materials, characteristics, preparation. Characteristics of polymeric materials, properties, production, degradation.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: - General overview of special materials. - Characteristics of ceramics and its classification. Characteristic properties and requirements for advanced technical ceramics. - The causes of brittleness on ceramics, principal and secondary causes. Principles of densification. - Experimental techniques of ceramic materials. - Coating, CVD and PVD methods. - The essence of rapid solidification, structural changes, properties, basic characteristics of rapid cooling. - Characteristics of amorphous metals (metallic glasses), conditions of their formation. - Mechanical, magnetic and corrosion properties of metallic glasses. Devitrification. - Ni superalloys for high temperature works, INCONEL alloys. - Basic structural characteristics, reinforcement mechanisms, application. - Physico-chemical and structural characteristics of nanocrystalline materials. - The preparation technique of nanocrystalline materials, mechanical properties. - Historical aspects, classification and characterization of polymeric materials. - Classification of rubber, natural rubber, synthetic rubbers. - Composite materials with polymer matrix, properties. - Degradation of polymeric materials. Exercise: - Familiarization with the filling of the exercises, literature, safety at work. - Criteria characterizing the special materials, basic groups and their characteristics, physical and metallurgical basis, comparison with 'traditional' materials. - Synthetic powders for the preparation of ceramics, basic characteristics, requirements, methods of production and evaluation. · Granulometry of powders, methods of measurements, including statistical processing of the results, the type of particle size distribution. · Preparation and properties of sintered materials, porosity, structure, ways of evaluation. - Metallic glasses, structural analysis, rtg. analysis, devitrification. Determination of the beginning of crystallization. - Structural phase analysis of INCONEL superalloys, identification of minor phases. - Evaluation of mechanical properties of polymeric materials. - Evaluation of the exercises and credits count.
