Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
Student will be able:
to define principal characteristics of main groups of engineering materials;
to analyse relations between internal structure and properties of engineering materials;
to define principle approaches how to solve problems of safety and reliability of engineering materials;
to characterise main degradation mechanisms of engineering materials;
to propose solutions how to reduce a risk of defect formation or materials destruction.

2. Internal structure and properties of engineering materials – metals, polymers, ceramics, composites.
3. Principal criteria how to evaluate safety and reliability of materials.
4. Principal degradation mechanisms of engineering materials.
5. Brittle failure of materials – characteristics, prevention.
6. Fatigue failure of materials – metals, polymers – characteristics, prevention.
7. Corrosion of engineering materials – characteristics, prevention. Materials resistant to electrolytical and chemical corrosion.
8. Creep of engineering materials – metal, ceramics, composites. Heat resistant materials.
9. Special degradation mechanisms of engineering materials.
