Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student is able to: - Outline the internal structure of engineering materials on different scales; - Describe the basic properties of engineering materials; - Clarify basic relationships between internal structure and properties of engineering materials; Characterise briefly metallic, ceramic, polymer and composite materials; to compare their advantages and disadvantages; - Define the technological flow in the production of iron and steel, to describe briefly the basic requirements for the production of high quality steel types, and the possibility of modelling of metallurgical processes; - Characterize the basic technology of casting into permanent or disposable molds; - Use the knowledge of metallurgy foundry alloys to their optimal use; - Digest the principal bulk forming technologies; - Describe the influence of forming on the structure and mechanical properties of material.

Summary

Field of materials: Materials in the evolution of human civilisation; basic classification of materials; internal structure of materials; principal properties of materials, mainly mechanical properties; metals and their alloys; ceramic materials; polymer materials; composites; examples of materials used in selected branches - medicine, sports, transport, building industry etc. In the field of metallurgy the subject is focused on description of recent trends in technologies of iron making and steelmaking, on basic theoretical analysis used foundry technology and materials for production of castings, on description of various technologies of bulk forming and on technologies used in the Czech steel works. Students will be briefly familiar with the modelling of metallurgical processes.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: 1. Introduction into the study at FMME VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava. 2. Role of materials in human civilization evolution. Internal structure of engineering materials. 3. Principal methods of mechanical properties testing; strength vs. toughness – tensile test, Charpy notch toughness test. 4. Metals and alloys – classification, principal properties, examples of applications. 5. Polymer, ceramic and composite materials – classification, principal properties, examples of use. 6. Introduction into the iron and steelmaking. Technological flow, basic units. Charge, a brief description of contemporary technology. Casting of steel: continuous casting, ingot casting. 7. Cleanliness and properties of steel. Brief description of the special steel grades’ production. Possibilities of physical and numerical modelling of metallurgical processes. 8. Possibilities and limits of casting production. Applied processes and techniques in foundries for production of mold, cores and castings. Using materials for castings. 9. Division of forming technologies by product type and by forming temperatures. Effect of treatment on the properties of the material. Perspective of formed steel products. 10. A review of non-ferrous metals – a basic classification, important properties of basic metals and alloys form the point of view of their application in various industrial branches. 11. A basic overview of production technologies of non-ferrous metals; principal classification; characteristic differences in processes of pyro-, hydro- and electrometallurgy; examples of production technologies for well-known metals; technologies to improve metal and material purity. 12. Presentation of four study programmes accredited at FMME VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava; possibilities of the further study at FMME and the choice of a study branch.
