Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
- student will be able to describe methods of joining, evaluate and determine the weldability of materials, characterize the structure and properties of welded joints
- student will be able to clarify the choice of connections, describe criteria for selecting technology for joining, especially welding, evaluate properties of joints
- formulate basic methods and parameters for machining, assess or select a machining material, to know special methods of joining and machining

Summary
Overview of joining and cutting. Methods for determining the weldability. Arc welding method and its implementation. Submerged arc welding and ways of using it. Electroslag welding and ways of performing. Methods surfacing (welding). Heat treatment of welds after welding. Evaluation of defectiveness and diagnostics of joints. Soft and hard soldering. Bonded joints, advantages and disadvantages. Machining methods of metallic surfaces. Effects of machining parameters on the surface quality and tension. Materials for machining.

Subject syllabus:
- Introduction. Principles and methods of mechanical machining (turning, milling, shaping, grinding).
- Parameters affecting the mechanical machining and their impact on the quality of the surface. Electrochemical machining.
- Materials for machine tools, machinability of materials. The selection of material for machining, tool wearing.
- The principle of materials joining (screw connection, V-joints, etc.) and permanent joining (welding, soldering, etc.) - overview and examples. - Fusion welding. Physical basis of the process. The essence of the arc. Melting and transfer of metal electrodes in an arc.
- Structure and properties of welded joints - weld metal, heat-affected zone, defects. Blacksmith welding, flame, arc welding - principles, examples.
- Electroslag welding, resistance welding, laser welding - principles, applications.
- Metallurgical factors affecting the quality of the welds, weldability tests, oxygen cutting.
- Heat treatment of steels before welding, during welding and heat treating of weldments.
- Control of welded joints, defects in joints and their classification according to ISO standards.
- Soft and hard soldering - principles, applications. Cladding by rolling, explosion and welding.
- Principles of bonding, testing of adhesives and adhesive joints, properties and failure of bonded joints.
- Degradation properties of joints (manufacturing, service). Examination of the causes of joints accidents and welded structures.
