Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student will gain the following abilities: - Describe raw materials containing metals, their characteristics, classification, storage and processing. - Enumerate basic physical and physico- chemical processing procedures. Hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and combined methods for processing of material containing nonferrous metals, refining of the obtained products. - Enumerate environmental and economic aspects of use of metals containing raw materials, identify heavy metals in individual components of environment, limits of metals in water, soil and atmosphere in metallurgy, evaluate the existing situation and recycling technologies in Czech Republic. - Describe recycling polymers and take up with methods of separation - Describe recycling of selected waste materials from general metals based on aluminium and its alloys, based on copper and its alloys, based on nickel and its alloys, based on lead and its alloys, based on tin and its alloys, based on zinc and its alloys - Describe recycling of materials based on carbides of tungsten and cobalt (combined recycling technology) - Characterise recycling of materials based on hazardous waste containing metals (dry galvanic cells, burnt-out light sources, discharge tubes, fluorescent lamps)

Summary

Metalbearing secondary raw materials, their characteristics, distribution, depositing, processing and treatment; physical and physicochemical treatment methods, hydro- and pyrometallurgical processing of metallurgical wastes; refining of obtained products; ecological and economical aspects of secondary metalbearing materials reuse, present situation in the Czech Republic; heavy metals in the environment, the limit concentration in waters, soils and air pollution, heavy metals in metallurgical operations; treatment of metalbearing wastes on the basis of lead, tin, noble metals, tungsten and their alloys (lead scrap, batteries, anodic sludge, electronical wastes etc.).

Subject syllabus:

• Secondery raw material with content of various metals, their characteristics, distribution, storage and basic treatment for subsequent processing. • Physical, physico - chemical finishing processes. Hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and combined methods of processing waste containing non-ferrous metals, refining procedures. • Environmental and economic aspects of the use of secondary raw materials of metal, the current situation and recycling technologies in the Czech Republic. • Heavy metals in different parts of the environment, levels of metals in water, soil and air in metallurgy, pollution prevention, the European IPPC Directive in the metallurgy of lead, copper and aluminum. • Recycling of plastics and their distribution, use in the packaging industry, basic sorting and finishing methods. • Recycling different types of waste aluminum and its alloys (aluminum smelting and refining waste, swabs). • Recycling of different types of waste copper and its alloys (waste copper, bronze, brass, base metal waste depreciation). • Recycling of different types of waste lead and its alloys (lead-acid balance, batteries, hard lead, pyrometallurgical recycling in KO Pribram. • Recycling of different types of waste nickel and its alloys (Ferronickel processing, joint processing of primary raw material). • Recycling of different types of wastes precious metal (the anode sludge, electronic waste, discarded car catalyst). • Recycling of different types of waste iron and iron alloys (Fe-core technology changes, waste recycling in metallurgical plants, the cycle of wastes).
