Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student will gain the following abilities: - defining of basic properties of light metals - description of basic method for production of individual light metals - making an overview of principal technologies for production of light metals and their alloys - classification of the alloys of aluminium, magnesium, beryllium and lithium according to various criteria - description of basic characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of materials based on light metals - explanation of relations between internal structure, microstructure and properties of materials based on light metals - apply obtained theoretical knowledge on theoretical and laboratory exercises - analyse and compare possibilities of application of materials based on light metals in industry.

Summary

Light metals, general characteristics and application. Production processes and refining of aluminum, preparing and properties of Al alloys. Methods of production of Mg and their alloys. Characteristics, classification and using of Al and Mg alloys. Technologies of Li, Be and others light metals and their alloys production and application.

Subject syllabus:

Introduction, classification of metals. Properties, reactivities and prices of light metals. World producers. Aluminum, properties, compounds, minerals, raw materials. Basic review of Al technologies. Alumina production: technology of Bayer process, technology of sintering method, combined methods. Aluminum electrolysis production: electrolyzers, electrolyte properties, cathode and anode processes, current efficiency. Alternative methods of Al production , carbothermic reduction of alumina, refining. Production and properties of Al alloys. Classification and application of Al alloys. Magnesium, properties, compounds, minerals, raw materials. Production of Mg dichloride. Mg electrolysis production, refining. Thermal reduction of magnesium oxide. Production and properties of Mg alloys. Classification and application of Mg alloys. Beryllium, properties, compounds, minerals, raw materials. Electrolysis production, thermal reduction. Be alloys, properties, classification and application. Lithium, properties, compounds, minerals, raw materials. Technology, alloys, properties, and application in industry. Other light metals - Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Ba, Sr - properties, compounds, minerals, raw materials. Technology and application in industry.
