Student after passing the exam from this subject will gain the following abilities: - define basic properties of metals - describe basic methods of production and processing of individual metals - make an overview of the principal technologies for production of metals and their alloys - classify alloys of selected metals - apply the acquired theoretical knowledge at theoretical and laboratory exercises

Summary

Basic relationships and structure of metallurgical units in primary ironmaking. Steelmaking slags, oxidation processes (oxidation of carbon, manganese, silicon and phosphorus), desulphurisation of steel, deoxidation of steel; steelmaking in steelmaking units, charging materials, secondary metallurgy refining of steel, casting of steel. Technical classification of 83 metallic elements, obtained purities and current prices of produced non-ferrous metals, including their production in Czech Republic and worldwide. Fundamentals of foundry industry: casting, creation of casting and sequence of individual operations at making of casting. Short overview of individual generation of sand mixtures and methods for compression of sand mixtures. Overview of foundry materials for castings. Trial casting. Procedure for production of casting and its processing.

Subject syllabus:

1) part – Ironmaking 1. Characteristics of the development of iron in the world and in CR. Energy and raw limit further development. 2. Thermodynamic, kinetic and thermal processes of blast furnace combustion zone. Fuels provisions. Complementarity functions fuel. 3. Alternative ironmaking technology. Specific features and advantages of the alternative ironmaking technology. Ecological aspects of alternative ironmaking technology. 2) part – Steelmaking 1. The history of steel production. Current methods of steel production. Steel reaction, theory of slag, deoxidation of steel. 2. Production of steel in oxygen converters and electric furnaces. 3. Secondary metallurgy and vacuum metallurgy. 4. Continuous casting of steel, tundish metallurgy. 3) part - Metallurgy of nonferrous metals 1. Metals, technical classification of metals, production of nonferrous metals in the Czech Republic. Raw materials for nonferrous metallurgy. Basic metallurgical processes - overview. 2. Pyrometallurgical processes, drying, calcination, roasting process, melting and products. 3. Hydrometallurgical processes - characterization. Adsorption, ion exchange, extraction and cementation in hydrometallurgy. Electrolysis, basic patterns, metals produced by electrolysis. 4. Overview – production technology of copper, lead, zinc, nickel, aluminium, noble metals and other selected metals. Exercises 1) part – Ironmaking 1. The symbolism of solid fuels, types of coal and coke, calculation of different moisture. 2. Calculation of the quantity of alkaline additives in the blast furnace charge, data for individual semestral work No1 3. Calculation of the amount of top gas and the amount of dry wind blowing. 2) part – Steelmaking 1. Steel Standards. 2. Calculation of element oxidation during steel manufacturing. 3. Desulphurization and dephosphorization of steel, gases in steel. 4. Test, credit. 3) part - Metallurgy of nonferrous metals 1. Periodic system of elements, metals, technical classification of nonferrous metals, alloys, fineness, their typical properties and applications. 2. Stoichiometric and technological calculations. 3. Electrometallurgical calculations, electrolytic dissolution and deposition of metals. 4. Experimental laboratory tasks, applied to the pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy. 4) part - Foundry 1. Production of non – permanent forms of a test cast 2. Processing of foundry procedural drawing and of documentation for the production of a cast 3. Tests of molding mixtures, analyses of molding mixtures – processing of a measurement record 4. Evaluation of castings microstructures Assessment of seminar sessions, credits
