Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student will gain the following abilities: - understanding of principles or theory of supraconductivity, magnetism, semiconductivity, conductivity, thermoelectric phenomena, insulants and dielectrics. - classification of basic groups of materials, which are used at construction of electrical and electronic devices. - application of basic theoretical knowledge on influence of composition and internal structure of material on physical, mechanical, electrical, magnetic and optical properties. - designing of technology for preparation and further processing of defined materials, realisation of electronic elements. - acquiring of knowledge on the newest types of materials for electrical engineering and micro-electronics: insulants and dielectrics, conductive materials, semiconductors, magnetic and special materials for microelectronics, optoelectronics, superconductors, conductors, nanomaterials, liquid crystals, shape memory alloys, etx., possibilities of miniaturisation. - proposal of appropriate application of materials in electrical engineering, opto- and microelectronics.

Summary

The subject deals with fundamental information about present as well as perspective materials that are used in particular branches of electronics: conductive,dielectric,ferroelectric,insulating,magnetic materials, semiconductors for microelectronics and optoelectronics, solar cells, liquid crystals, nanomaterials.

Conductors, semiconductors and insulators – physical, chemical, thermodynamic and mechanical properties. Materials with high electrical conductivity. Copper, aluminum and their alloys. Refractory metals. Carbonic materials. Materials for contacts, thermocouples, bimetals, solders.Resistant materials. Superconductivity. Low - temperature and high - temperature superconductors. Semiconductor materials. Silicon, germanium. Semiconductor compounds. Materials for optoelectronics. Oxide semiconductor materials. Planar epitaxial technology of production of integrated circuits. Liquid crystals, composites, shape memory materials. Nanomaterials for electronics. Magnetic materials and their characteristics. Magnetic retentive and non-retentive materials. Ferrites. Dielectrics and insulators, characteristics. Polarization of dielectrics. Fluent, liquid and solid dielectrics and insulators. Construction materials. Material engineering of microelectronics.
