Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student after passing the exam from this subject will gain the following abilities: - make an overview of properties, existing state and structure of consumption of noble metals. - categorise selected secondary raw materials containing noble metals, electronic waste, material characteristics of electronic waste, depleted fixation baths, chemical composition and issues concerning collection, discarded car catalysers, their material characteristic. - evaluate possibilities of noble metals recovery from electronic waste by mechanical pyro-metallurgical and hydro-metallurgical processes. - evaluate possibilities of silver recovery from depleted fixation baths by chemical precipitation, sorption processes, electrolysis. - evaluate possibilities of recovery of platinum, palladium and rhodium from car catalysers by pyro-metallurgical, hydro-metallurgical and combined recycling processes. - compare possibilities of noble metals recovery at conventional processes of production of lead and copper. - explain theory of dissolution of gold and silver in solution of thiourea. - make and overview of applications of thiourea for extraction of gold and silver, perspectives of use of thiourea solutions for extraction of noble metals. - evaluate economic aspects of noble metals recycling from waste materials.

Summary

The subject is focused on group of noble metals, their properties and structure of consumption as future sources for recycling. It familiarises students with selected secondary raw materials, with contents of noble metals, their material characteristics and possibilities of noble metals recycling. It deals with recycling at use of conventional pyro-processes and to the most widespread recycling processes of materials containing gold, silver, platinum, palladium and rhodium.
