Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student will be able to: - classify nonferrous metals - define and apply basic theoretical knowledge from physical chemistry, chemistry and theory of metallurgical processes to processes of production of nonferrous metals - characterise basic pre-requisites for development of processes of pyro-, hydro- and electrometallurgy - classify and explain individual technologies - evaluate optimum technological processes for production of selected groups of metals - formulate advantages and disadvantages of individual technologies - apply knowledge at solution of technical problems

Summary

Subject is focused on theoretical bases of processes used at production of nonferrous metals. Production of non-ferrous metals uses a broad range of raw materials of diversified chemical character. This requires also a broad range of procedures for their processing. Students get acquainted with basics of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and electrometallurgical processes as well as with selected basic production technologies of heavy, light, noble, refractory, radioactive and rare earth metals. He will introduced into the domain of preparation and applications of nonferrous metal alloys.

Subject syllabus:

Thermodynamic and kinetic description of pyro-metallurgical processes of production of non-ferrous metals, thermal dissociation, oxidation roasting, sulphatising roasting, reduction, chloration and chloridation. Kellog’s and Ellingham’s diagrams. Melting, properties of melts of slags for non-ferrous metals, grits, speisses and raw metals. Distillation, sublimation, condensation. Thermodynamics and kinetics of hydro-metallurgical processes for production of non-ferrous metals – leaching, Pourbaix’s diagrams. Chemical processing and cleaning of spent liquor by pressure reduction, cementation, condensing, adsorption, ion exchange, extraction. Theory of electro-metallurgy – electrolytic dissolution and deposition of metals from aqueous solutions and melts, standard electrode and redox potentials, decomposition voltage, overvoltage of hydrogen and oxygen.
