Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
Student of postgraduate study will gain the following abilities:
- explain relationships between structure and basic properties of materials
- apply basic principles of diffusion in solids on transformations in alloys
- describe plastic deformation mechanisms in metals and alloys
- define basic types of phase transformations in metals and alloys
- classify and make an overview of basic properties of metals and alloys for structural, electromagnetic, superconducting, automotive, aerospace and other applications
- compare and select individual types of materials according to selected properties for specific applications
- optimise material and technological parameters of preparation and treatment of materials
- formulate advantages and disadvantages of applications of nonferrous metal in various industries
- evaluate influence of possible impurities on service properties of metals and their alloys
- characterise the failure behaviour of metallic materials
- recommend suitable thermo-mechanical treatment for modification of structures and properties of materials
- select an optimum material for various areas of application from the viewpoint of their mechanical properties and interaction with the environment
- apply the findings at solution of technical problems

Summary
Classification of nonferrous metals. Physical and mechanical properties of metals and alloys. Influence of impurities and alloying elements on basic properties of metals and their alloys, mechanisms of interactions and possibility of their employment to modify metals and alloys properties. Phase diagrams, phase transformations, heat treatment, stability and metastability of phases applied on the selected advanced alloys.

1. General overview of materials and application domains
2. Copper alloys, bronzes, brasses, Cu-Ni alloys. Physical and metallurgical features. Structures, properties and application.
3. Nickel alloys with specific mechanical, magnetic and corrosion properties. Structures, properties and application.
4. Superalloys.Physical and metallurgical features. Phase stability. Structures, properties and application.
5. Aluminum and Al alloys. Physical and metallurgical features. Heat treatment, G-P zones, precipitation strengthening. Structures, properties and application.
6. Magnesium and alloys. Structures, properties and application.
7. Berylium and alloys. Structures, properties and application.
8. Lithium and alloys. Structures, properties and application.
9. Titanium alloys (Alpha, alpha+beta, beta). Phase transformations, precipitation process. Efect of heat treatment on microstructure features and properties. Application.
