Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student will be able to: - define and apply basic theoretical knowledge from physical chemistry, chemistry and theory of metallurgical processes on processes for production of nonferrous metals - characterise basic pre- requisites for development of the processes of pyro- , hydro- a electrometallurgy - design an optimum technological process for production of individual groups of metals - evaluate influence of changes of technological parameters on production process, its development, efficiency of these processes and possible impacts on environment.

Summary

The subject is focused on theoretical bases of processes used at production of nonferrous metals. Students get acquainted with basics of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and electrometallurgical processes for production of nonferrous metals.

Subject syllabus:

· Thermodynamic and kinetic description of pyro-metallurgical processes of production of non-ferrous metals, thermal dissociation, oxidising roasting, sulphatising roasting, reduction, chlorination and chloridation. · Kellog’s and Ellingham’s diagrams. · Melting, properties of melts of slags for non-ferrous metals, grits, speisses and raw metals. · Distillation, sublimation, condensation. · Thermodynamics and kinetics of hydro-metallurgical processes for production of non-ferrous metals – leaching. · Pourbaix’s diagrams. · Chemical processing and cleaning of spent liquor by pressure reduction, cementation, condensing, adsorption, ion exchange, extraction. · Theory of electro-metallurgy – electrolytic dissolution and deposition of metals from aqueous solutions and melts, standard electrode and redox potentials, decomposition voltage, overvoltage of hydrogen and oxygen.
