Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student should be able to do the following: - classify nonferrous metals - apply basic theoretical knowledge from physical chemistry, chemistry and theory of metallurgical processes to the processes for production of nonferrous metals - characterise basic pre-requisites for development of processes of pyro-, hydro- and electrometallurgy - classify varoius technologies - evaluate optimum technological process for production of selected groups of metals - formulate advantages and disadvantages of individual technologies - apply findings at solution of technical problems

Summary

Metals, their properties, technical classification, sources of raw materials for nonferrous metals.Characteristics of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and electrometallurgical procedures for processing of nonferrous metals. Bases of processes for preparing, refining and recycling of heavy, light, noble, refractory, radioactive and rare earth metals. Alloys of nonferrous metals - basic properties and applications.

1. Technical classification of nonferrous metals, their typical properties, applications of pure metals and theri alloys in modern industry 2. Raw materials for metallurgy, importance of secondary raw materials and recycling 3. Thermodynamics and kinetics of pyrometallurgy processes of nonferrous metals, thermal dissociation, roasting, reduction, chlorination, Kellog´s and Ellingham´s diagrams 4. Melting, nonferrous metallurgy products: slags, matte, speiss, crude metal. 5. Refining processes 6. Hydrometllurgy processes 7. Electrometallurgy processes 8. Technology, properties and application of heavy metals and their alloys (Cu, Pb, Zn) 9. Technology, properties and application of heavy metals and their alloys (Ni, Hg, Sn) 10. Technology, properties and application of light metals and their alloys (Al, Mg, Be and others) 11. Technology, properties and application of noble metals and their alloy (Au, Ag, Pt group metals) 12. Technology, properties and application of high temperature melting metals and their alloys (Ti, W, Mo) 13. Technology, properties and application of rare earth metals and their alloys Sc, Y, La and lanthanides) 14. Technology, properties and application of radioactive metals (U, Ac, Th, Ra, Fr, transuranium elements and transactinides)
