Summary
Subject is focused on methods of characterization of raw materials and products including waste metallurgical industry. Students will study methods of chemical, phase, morphological analysis and methods of waste hazard assessment according to valid EU and Czech legislation.

Subject syllabus:
The course is focused on the following issues:
1. European Union and Czech legislation for waste evaluation and qualification. The waste legislation and regulation, the waste qualification.
2. Classification of waste, characteristics of evaluated pollutants in terms of the possibility of their identification and determination their content in waste.
3. Routine and scientific approaches to assess the impact of pollutants on the environment, living organisms and waste recycling needs.
4. Basic steps of chemical analysis, procedures of sampling, storages and handling.
5. Treatment of samples - physical and chemical, determination of basic parameters of waste material (eg. granulometry, humidity, etc.).
6. Principles, instrumentation and procedures for determination of inorganic components in waste, methods of spectral and electrochemical methods used in waste evaluation.
7. Principles, instrumentation and procedures for determination of organic pollutants in waste, chromatographic methods (liquid, ionic and gas chromatography).
8. Determination of morphological properties of waste and methods of their determination, instrumentation, advantages and disadvantages of methods.
9. Phase and structural composition of waste and techniques used, methods used to determine the phase composition, their principles, instrumentation advantages and disadvantages.
10. Ecotoxicity and other important parameters of waste affecting the environment and health of living organisms (eg. mutagenicity, genotoxicity, etc.).
