Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student who successfully completes the subject is able to define key aspects of road and rail transport which contribute to their environmental and health risks. Further, the student can describe single sources of particulate, organic and inorganic emissions and present particular examples of potential impacts on single components of the environment. The student is able to discuss current trends in development of eco-friendly technologies and materials for reduction of environmental and health risks and further is able to describe legislative framework of this issue.

Summary

The subject is focused on potential impacts of road and rail transportation on environment and human health. The subject also includes definition and description of sources emitting particulates, organic compounds and inorganic gases and moreover particular examples of potential impacts on single components of the environment as a by-product of exhaust and non-exhaust processes. The issue of development of eco-friendly technologies and materials for reduction of environmental and health impacts of transportation and finally the legislative framework of this issue are also dicussed within this subject.

Subject syllabus:

1. Introduction to the impact of transport on individual environmental compartments, distribution of emission sources and basic emission categorization. 2. Emissions from combustion processes: emissions from combustion of fuels, emissions from the use of catalysts - their mechanism of origin, character and methods of measurement and characterization, emissions of additives used in fuels. Differences between petrol and diesel engines in the chemical composition and character of dust particles. 3. Emissions from non-combustion processes: emissions from abrasion of brakes, tires, roadway and other vehicle parts - origin mechanism, nature and methods of measurement and characterization. Differences in emissions from brake plates containing metals and organic plates. 4. Emissions from electromobility - sources, mechanism of origin and character - differences from vehicles with internal combustion engines and friction braking systems. 5. Emissions from abrasive particles from rail transport - sources, mechanism of formation and character of particles from metal-ceramic and organic brake pads used in metro cars, trains and fast trains. 6. Impact of transport emissions on air quality - emissions of gases, organic substances and suspended dust particles. Problems of resuspended particles and their contribution to air pollution. 7. Impacts of emissions from transport on soil quality - emissions of organic substances and sedimented fraction of particles and their influence and behavior of soil systems, e.g. affecting soil fertility, etc. 8. Impact of transport emissions on water quality - solubility of individual components and their transfer from soils to surface and groundwater. 9. Possible effects of transport emissions on living systems - aquatic, soil organisms and human health - transport pathways, especially inhalation, penetration into organism and influence on individual organ systems. Professional exposure (drivers, traffic police, etc.) and its health impacts. 10. Technology to minimize impacts on the environment and human health and development of environmentally friendly materials for use in transport - development of materials for automobile brake pads, brake discs with surface treatment and cooling system and their impact on produced emissions. 11. Legislative framework of transport emissions - legislation for control and regulation of emissions from combustion and non-combustion processes. Methods of routine measurements.
