Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student, who successfully completes the subject, is able to describe composition and properties of materials used in brake systems of vehicles and define standard procedures utilized for evaluation of friction performance and wear. Further, the student is able to describe behavior of brake materials at different operation conditions and also define emissions from friction processes related to braking of automobiles, including character of these emissions and methods of their evaluation. The student is also able to discuss current trends in development of new materials for these aplications and outline legislative framework of control and regulation of emissions from non-exhaust processes in traffic.

Summary

The subject is focused on materials for applications in brake systems, their composition, properties and methods for evaluation of friction performance and wear. Behavior of these brake materials at different conditions of operation and description of environmental aspects of friction processes associated with braking of automobiles, together with an outline of character and evaluation methods of wear emissions are also included in the subject. Moreover, design and development of new materials for this application and its legislative framework for control and regulation of emissions from non-exhaust emissions are discussed.

Subject syllabus:

1. Materials used for automobile disc and drum brakes - groups of components and their functions, production of materials for automotive braking systems, properties and composition trends for individual types of vehicles. 2. Car braking - material changes in braking systems that occur in friction processes due to temperature and pressure. Friction layer formation and its influence on friction efficiency of brake system materials. Abrasion of brake system materials, formation of wear particles and their influence on the service life of individual components of the brake system. 3. Methods of testing friction abrasion properties of materials for brake systems - laboratory tribometers, brake dynamometers, operational tests - test setup, standard test procedures, demonstration of data obtained by individual methods and interpretation of experimental data from individual test methods. 4. Behavior of braking system materials under different conditions of operation - high braking system temperatures, air humidity, presence of road salts, etc. - changes in brake system materials due to driving style, environmental conditions and differences in individual friction composite groups (metal, organic, ceramic). 5. Abrasion particle emissions - mechanism of origin, character, methods of measurement and characterization of chemical composition and particle morphology. 6. Emissions of gaseous substances - mechanism of formation, methods of measurement and characterization - emission of inorganic gases, volatile organic compounds and their possible risks. 7. Trends in the development of environmentally friendly materials - substitution of some hazardous components of friction composites, additives in friction composites and coating of brake discs to reduce abrasion particles emissions, abrasive particles trapping device and others. 8. Legislative framework of issues of emissions from non-combustion processes in transport - upcoming legislation for control and regulation of dust particles emissions.
