Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of the course is to expand knowledge in the field of multiphase systems, phase equilibria in multicomponent systems, equilibrium in electrochemical processes, thermophysical and thermodynamic behavior of these systems and their subsequent application to selected processes in scientific research and chemical technology practice.

Subject syllabus:

Thermodynamics of unary, binary, ternary and other multicomponent systems in solid, liquid and gas phases. Description using empirical laws and thermodynamic functions. Mixing and additional quantities, thermodynamic functions, conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium. Thermodynamics of solid and liquid solutions of electrolytes and non-electrolytes. Thermodynamic models of solutions. Phase equilibria in unary, binary, ternary and other polycomponent systems with different miscibility of components and their technological applications. Computational thermodynamics in the field of multicomponent multiphase systems. Use of thermal analysis methods in the field of thermo-physical and thermodynamic study of multicomponent multiphase systems. Physical chemistry of phase interfaces, surface and interfacial energy, surface equilibria at the contact of three phases, curved phase interfaces, surface films of insoluble substances on liquids and solids. Electrical properties of phase interfaces, electrical bilayer, electrokinetic potential and electrokinetic phenomena. Physical chemistry of dispersion systems and their classification. Molecular kinetic properties, thermal motion, sedimentation phenomena, membrane equilibria. Optical and mechanical properties of systems. State changes and the importance of dispersion systems. Structure of dispersed particles. Phase dispersion systems, stability of heterogeneous lyophobic systems, preparation methods. Molecular colloids, solutions of high molecular weight electrolytes and non-electrolytes, behavior of macromolecules in solution, selected properties and stability. Micellar colloids. Continuous dispersion systems, gels. The selection of chapters will be made on the basis of the orientation of the doctoral dissertation together with the supervisor
