Subject syllabus:

1. General inorganic chemistry. Trends in properties of s, p, d, f elements and their compounds. 2. Binding and stereochemistry of covalent compounds. Bonds and structure of solid metallic and ionic substances. 3. Acids, bases and ions in aqueous solutions. Oxidation, reduction and thermal properties of inorganic compounds. 4. Thermodynamic stability of oxidation states - Frost diagrams. 5. Reactions in non-aqueous media - ionic, oxide and metal melts. 6. Acid-base and oxidation-reduction reactions in molten salts and oxide melts. Acidity, alkalinity and oxidation capacity of oxide melts. 7. Synthesis of inorganic compounds in molten salts. 8. Preparation and characterization of inorganic nanomaterials. 9. Chemistry of metallic f-elements. Inorganic compounds of 4f-elements (lanthanides) and selected 5f-elements (Th, Pa, U, Pu), their similarity to elements of 4th, 5th and 6th groups. 10. The use of lanthanides in metallurgy with regard to the stability of their oxides and sulfides.
