Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
Graduate of the subject gets an overview on chemical reactions occuring in the system of water-soil-air, further will get acquainted with biogeochemical cycles of oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorus, and environmental impacts of selected technologies (e.g. in energy). Morover, student will get knowledge on inorganic and organic pollutants in the environment including their potential risks.

Summary
The subject is focused on deepening knowledge in the field of chemistry of water, soil and air, i.e. chemical reactions occuring in these systems, further in the field of pollution of these compartments of the environment with interconnection to selected technologies having a potential to significantly affect quality of the environment. Introduction to potential environmental risks of the above mentioned innorganic and organic pollutants will be included as well.

Subject syllabus:
1. Introduction to environmental chemistry. Biosphere, hydrosphere,atmosphere, pedosphere and technologies.
2. Introduction to chemistry of water (properties of water), acid-base reactions, precipitation reactions and complex reactions.
3. Oxidation-reduction reactions, redox potential of waters, solubility of gases (O2, CO2), carbonate equilibrium, adsorption.
4. Basic parameters of water quality. Water purification and treatment.
5. Introduction to chemistry of atmosphere. Development of atmosphere. Temperature profiles. Organic and inorganic pollutants in the atmosphere.
6. Chemical reactions in atmoshere. Photochemical smog. Stratospheric and tropospheric ozone. Particulate matter and their fate in the atmosphere.
7. Introduction to chemistry of soil. Soil formation, soil profiles. Primary and secondary minerals. Weathering processes, clay minerals and their sorption properties.
8. Acid-base and ion-exchange reactions in soil. Buffering intervals and acid neutralizing capacity. Cation exchange capacity. Wastes and soil pollutants. Soil degradation.
9. Global biogeochemical cycles in biosphere. Block-diagram of biogeochemical cycles. Carbon and oxygen cycles. Anthropogenic impact on carbon dioxide equillibrium.
10. Global biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus. Impact of fertilization on nitrogen cycle, formation of nitrous oxide. Sulphur cycle and acidification of the environment. Phosphorus cycle and eutrophication.
11. Persistent compounds in the environment. Biogeochemical cycles of metals. Organic persistent pollutants – polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated organic compounds, pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls.
12. Natural sources and energy. Enironmentally friendly utilization of coal. Forms of hazardous elements in coal. Combustion in coal power plants and distribution of elements according to vapor tension. Gas desulphurification. Fluid combustion.
13. Ecological aspects of nuclear energy. Types of nuclear reactors and their safety. Fission products processing. Radionuclides in the environment. Population irradiance from single sources.
14. Trends in environmental chemistry.
