Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
To acquaint students to the basic concepts of general chemistry, their significance and their mutual laws. Students will learn how the periodic table of elements and be able to estimate the basic properties of elements based on their positions in the periodic system of elements (PSE).

Mass and its properties and structure. Basic chemical terms. States of matters. Structure of atom. Electron cloud. Chemical bond. Reaction kinetics. Energetical changes on chemical reactions. Dispersion systems. Electrolytes, electrolytic dissotiation. Oxidation-reduction reaction. Periodic system of elements. Hydrogen, oxygen, water, and air. Prevalent properties of non-metal elements and thier compounds. Carbon chemistry. Silikates. Metals, basic principles of production, properties and utilization of technically important metals and their compounds.

During the semester, the students write two tests, KT1 and KT2.

Subject syllabus:
1. Chemistry and its importance. Matter and its properties. Chemical formulas and equations.
2. Basic chemical concepts and quantities. Of substance systems - classification. Composition of substance systems . A solutions.
3. The construction the atom. The atomic nucleus, electron shell. The valence electrons. Periodic system of elements.
4. The chemical bond. Basic types of bonds, covalent and coordinate covalent bond. Intermolecular binding interaction.
5. Aggregation states of substances. Latent transformation, latent heat. Structural types of substances.
6. Chemical reactions - Classification. Energy changes during the course of a chemical reaction. The kinetics of chemical reactions. Chemical equilibrium and its influence.
7. The ionic balance. The electrolytic dissociation. The ionic equation. Acids, bases and salts. Hydrolysis. Exponent pH.
8. An electrochemical processes. Oxidatively - reduction reactions. Standard electrode potentials. Electrochemical voltage range of metals. Galvanic cells. Electrolysis.
9. Basic elements and their compounds: hydrogen, oxygen, water, oxides. Noble gases - characteristics, applications.
10. Significant nonmetals - halogens, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus. Properties, uses important compounds.
11. Carbon. Inorganic carbon compounds.
12. Silicon, silicates. The technical silicate materials, glass.
13. Metals - basic principles of their production.
Block s - elements: alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, properties of the compound.
14. Block d - elements: characteristic of elements technically important the transition metals. Block f - elements: lanthanides, actinides.
