Summary

Subject Metals and the Environment is focused on the evaluation of the heavy metals effect on the environment and humans. During the pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, electrometallurgical and combined preparation processes of metals and their alloys and products based on heavy metals in contact with the environment may occur burden for all components of the environment. Students will be acquainted with the basic terms from the area toxicology, potential pollution sources of air, water and soil materials based on heavy metals. The following are specified toxic and eco-toxic effects of selected metals, specific sources and lines of contamination. The subject also includes an overview of tools and guidelines to reduce the negative impacts of production on the environment - environmental management system, analysis of product life cycle, product innovation, Eco-labeling and ecodesign applications. An integral part is an overview of valid legislation relating to this issue for Czech Republic and EU countries, including the Law on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC), pollutants registers, BREF, BAT documents and their application.
