To gain view of development of new scientific findings and their relation to development of technology in main branches of industry, most of all then of student’s own specialization

Summary

Course gives a brief view of basic issues of science and technology development from the beginning of man history up till present. It provides a view of development of scientific findings in relation to development of technology, which is observed from the point of its level in main industries. History of science and technology are substantial part of human history. Mutual social, economical and political links influencing this area enable better understanding of development of technical problem within socioeconomic context.

a) visit a technical museum or a technical sight (Dolní oblast Vítkovice, Hornické muzeum, slag heap Ema etc.) b)write an individual project (min. 3 pages) about a topic from DVT (persons, technical sights, history of things …) and send to my e-mail. Add bibliography at the end of the paper (čsn iso 690). (Group work or individual work) (In written form.)

Subject syllabus:

1. Opening session, introduction to the structure of the course, literature 2. Mining and technical schools; Personalities from VŠB-TUO; Technical monuments of the Moravian-Silesian Region 3. Development of machines and enginery in antiquity times 4. Development of machines and enginery in medieval times; Medieval crafts 5. Development of machines and enginery in modern period until industrial revolution. Leonardo da Vinci and his machines. 6. Industrial revolution and the origins of modern industries 7. 19th century; the first stage of the technical-scientific revolution 8. Technique of mining 9. Historical trends in development of transportation and transport vehicles in the human history 10. Historical development of electrotechnics 11. 20th century; the second stage of the technical-scientific revolution 12. Computers 13. Presentation and evaluation of students’ papers I.
