To gain view of development of new scientific findings and their relation to development of technology in main branches of industry, most of all then of student’s own specialization

Summary
Course gives a brief view of basic issues of science and technology development from the beginning of man history up till present. It provides a view of development of scientific findings in relation to development of technology, which is observed from the point of its level in main industries.
History of science and technology are substantial part of human history. Mutual social, economical and political links influencing this area enable better understanding of development of technical problem within socioeconomic context.

1. Visit to a technical museum or a technical monument (e.g. Dolní oblast Vítkovice, Hornické muzeum, slag heap EMA, technical sight in your country etc.). Take a photo on the spot or take your ticket.
2. Elaborating an individual project (min. 2 pages) about a visit a technical museum or a technical monument; containing interesting information about that place, the history of the museum or the technical sight, photos or a ticket from there. What was the motivation for choosing a place? Send to my e-mail the project with photos from there. (in written form)

Subject syllabus:
1. Introduction to the course, literature
2. Mining and technical schools; Personalities from VŠB-TUO, Technical monuments of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
3. Development of machines and enginery in antiquity times. Archimedes, Hero of Alexandria.
4. Development of machines and enginery in medieval times.
5. Development of machines and enginery in modern period until idustrial revolution. Leonardo da Vinci and his machines.
6. Industrial revolution and the origins of modern industries.
7. 19th century; the first stage of the technical-scientific revolution.
8. 20th century; the first stage of the technical-scientific revolution.
9. Historical development of electrotechnics (Tesla, Edison)
10. Historical development of electrotechnics (Křižík, Kolben)
11. Historical trends in development of transportarion and transport vehicles in the human history.
12. Industries and their role in armament industry in 1800s and 1900s. The Vítkovice Ironworks (Dolní oblast Vítkovice), Škoda.
13. Test.
14. Closing session, evaluation of students' projects and tests.
