Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

1. To acquaint students with the historical development of physical culture in the world. 2. To teach students how to interpret the philosophical base of works written by most significant personalities of the history of physical education and sports. 3. To insert the historical development of the system of physical culture in our countries into the European context. 4. To point out the most significant personalities of Czech and world Olympism.

Subject syllabus:

1. Definition of basic terms (history, culture, physical culture), physical culture of the oldest civilizations 2. Physical culture of ancient Crete and ancient Greece 3. Creation of ancient Olympic games and its development in archaic and Augustan age 4. Hellenist Greece – Roman age of antic Olympic games 5. Physical culture of ancient Rome and the Middle Ages 6. Humanism, enlightenment and philanthropism in physical culture 7. Ling’s Swedish physical training system 8. Jahn-Eiselen’s German system 9. English system of sports and games 10. Natural physical training methods, women physical culture and sport, scouting, YMCA 11. Creation of modern Olympic games and their development until the Second World War 12. Olympic games after the Second World War 13. Physical culture in Czech lands until World War II 14. Physical culture in Czech lands after World War II
