Summary

The goal of the course is to teach students how to make use of the services and tools available in internet. The course has three parts: 1) written presentations, introduction to LaTeX 2) preparing slideshows, Giving a lecture, controling the stress 3) Internet presentations, introduction to HTML, CSS and JavaScript We stress keeping typogrrapical and ethical rules in a scientific work.

Compulsory literature:

Manuals of the programming languages on the Internet. Process of gaining proper sources is taught in the introductory seminar.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

In order to get the credit, students - give a short talk in the seminar supported by a presentation in LaTeX or PPT) or submit a website, where CCS JavaScript or PHP is used (up to 50 points) - submit a formally correct paper in MS Word or LaTeX, where math formulas are typeset (up to 50 points)

Subject syllabus:

Students will practice diverse methods of presentation of their scientific work. The contents is oriented on attempting to facing up the real situation which students get into by defending their diploma at the latest. 1. Searching in the Internet (search engines, choosing a proper phrase). Suitable sources for the topics of this seminars: manual to LaTeX, and CSS, advices how to write and how to give a lecture. 2. When what and how to cite a source. 3. Typographical rules. “Wysiwyg” editors. Introduction to LaTeX. 4. Written presentations: abstract, paper, thesis, book. Their formal and stylistic features. 5. How to formulate technical (mathematical respectively) principles and equations within a prose. 6. Oral presentations: how to give a lecture, advice to beginning Science speakers what to say when and how to say it. How to prepare a slideshow (PowerPoint vs. LaTeX) or a poster (Photoshop-like applications vs. LaTeX). 7. Oral presentation checklist: how to prepare for managing the stress, making a reserved time, discussing with an opponent, operating presentation devices,… 8. Student’s presentations 9. Generally, we stress adherence to typographical rules and a ethical principles, especially citation rules.
