Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Illustrate the achieved theoretical knowledge in modern physics with its practical applications Make the students acquainted with the operation of basic experimental apparatuses used in optics and modern physics Apply the simple statistical methods of measurement processing and evaluation

Teaching methods

Experimental work in labs


The practicals follow the theoretical subjects called Physics III and Physics IV, devoted to optics and the introduction to modern physics, and supply the basic practical exercises. Attention is paid to the experiments demonstrating wide range of light phenomena – geometrical as well as wave optics, polarization of light and quantization of its energy. It also includes the fundamental experiments from atomic and nuclear physics. Not only the measurement realization itself, but also its correct processing and evaluation is emphasized.

Subject syllabus:

1. Refractive index, refractometry, dispersion of light 2. Reflection on a plane surface (Fresnel equations) 3. The optical parameters of imaging systems (lenses, microscope) 4. The optics of anisotropic media (polarization) 5. The study of light diffraction on the grid, slit, doubleslit, wire, edge, circular aperture 6. Measurements on the Michelson interferometer 7. Balmer series and measuring the wavelength of the accelerated electrons by means of diffraction on a polycrystal 8. Measuring the Planck's constant on the basis of photoelectric effect 9. Franck - Hertz experiment with mercury and neon, 10. Study of properties of solids using X-rays
