The course provides the survey of state-of-art in the area of optical sensors. The students should be able to evaluate, analyze and suggest the solutions to various practical sensing situations based on optical sensors applications.

Summary

The course is oriented on optical sensors of physical and chemical quantities. Fundamental principles are discussed together with specific sensing setups. The role of optical fiber sensing technology is stressed.

Subject syllabus:

1. Fundamental principles used for design of optical sensors 2. Basic components of optical sensors - light sources, detectors and waveguide components 3. Optical sensors of diplacement, position, velocity and angular velocity 4. Optical sensors of temperature, press and vibration 5. Optical sensors of electric and magnetic quantities 6. Optical sensors of chemical and biological quantities 7. Fundamental features of optical fiber sensors 8. Single-mode and multimode optical fiber sensors 9. Sensing applications if fiber optic gratings 10. Fiber optic spectrometers 11. Fiber optic interferometers application in sensing problems 12. Sensor based on specialty optical fibers
