Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

In the course of the practical exercises the student reaches the ability to find suitable method for the measurement of selected physicochemical properties, the practical courses also lead to achieve the understanding of the principles of the selected methods and obtaining the skills in the field of the interpretation of the experimental data.

Experimental work in labs


The Physical chemistry exercises in practical level complements the subject Chemistry II – Physical Chemistry. Within the frame of the subject students are getting acquainted with the following topics of physical chemistry measurements: • Measurement of the density of the liquid and solid samples and determination of the surface tension. • Viscosity measurements of the liquids and its dependency on the temperature. • Determination of the partial molar volumes. • Determination of the heat capacity of the solid samples. • Phase equilibrium in three components system. • Extraction, determination of the distribution ratio. • Determination of the molecular weight using ebulioscopic and cryoscopic technique. • Conductivity measurement of the electrolytes, its dependency on electrolyte concentration and temperature. •Determination of the dissociation constant for week acids based on the measurement of the conductivity. Evaluation of the solubility product. • Determination of the molar absorption coefficient. Evaluation of the band gap energy of the semiconductors in powder form. • Rate of the chemical reactions, evaluation of the specific rate constant of the pseudo-first order chemical reaction.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

Combined oral and written form. The study results are verified continuously in the exercises. Score > 50 % is required for passing the exercises.

Subject syllabus:

1. Electrolysis, conductivity of solutions. Conductometric titrations. 2. Partial molar volume. Determination of partial molar volumes. 3. Viscosity. Measurement of viscosity. 4. Heat capacity, heat of combustion, heat of dilution. 5. Distillation, extraction. Determination of the distribution ratio. 6. Density of solid and liquid mater. Measurement of density. 7. Surface tension. 8. Dissociation constant, solubility product. 9. Evaluation of band gap (Eg), UV–VIS diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. 10. Evaluation of photodegradation activity. 11. Determination of the molar absorption coefficient. 12. Ebullioscopy, cryoscopy. Determination of the molecular weight using ebulioscopic and cryoscopic technique. 13. Specific rate constant of chemical reactions, activation energy. 14. Calorimetry.
