Student learns fundamentals of optics. Attention is focused: (1) on theoretical principles, which will be applied in consequent study, (2) on learning of ability to solve physical problems in optics and apply mathematical knowledge in description of optical phenomena, (3) to get wide knowledge and summary of optical methods in modern applications.

Subject syllabus:

Contents: 1. Geometrical optics, imaging, aberrations of optical systems 2. Optical instruments, eye and vision, matrix ray optics 3. Wave function, wave and Helmholtz equations, plane and spherical waves 4. Gaussian beam, polychromatic light. 5. Interference and coherence of light 6. Diffraction of light 7. Electromagnetic optics, Maxwell equations, energy of electromagnetic radiation 8. Solution of Maxwell\'s equations in homogeneous and isotropic medium 9. Conducting media, complex permittivity, relation between absorption and dispersion 10. Polarization of light, Jones matrix formalism, polarization components 11. Reflection and refraction of electromagnetic waves, Fresnel\\\'s equations. 12. Optics of anisotropic medium 13. Introduction to nonlinear and quantum optics
