The subject includes natural silicates as starting materials for preparation of nanomaterials and carbon materials, occurring in nano- scales or have characteristics of nanostructures.

Subject syllabus:

1. Clays and clay minerals. Nanostructures of clay minerals. 2. Water in clay minerals. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic clay. Evaluation forms of water in clay using laboratory methods. 3. Properties of clay minerals. Charge layer, ion exchange capacity, structural order of layered structures. 4. Characteristics of 1:1 sheet silicates. Reducing particles. 5. Characteristics of 2:1 sheet silicates. Preparing smectites to nanocomposites. 6. Vermiculite. Structure and crystal-chemistry. Preparing vermiculites to nanocomposites. 7. Evaluation of nanocomposites containing clay minerals by laboratory methods. 8. Carbon and carbonaceous materials. 9. Graphite structure, polytypes and faults in the structure. Diamond structure. 10. Thin films based on graphite and diamond. 11. Fullerenes. 12. Carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes. 13. Pyrolytic carbon. Activated carbon. Soot. 14. Composites on the carbon basis. TRAINING TOPICS 1. Mechanical particle grinding techniques. Microscopic evaluation. 2. Preparation and evaluation of monoionic clay minerals using XRD. 3. Preparation and characterization of modified clay minerals using SEM and XRD. 4. Exfoliation of kaolinite with urea and evaluation using X-ray diffraction. 5. Characterization of composites containing clay nanofiller in polymer using light optical microscopy. 6. Characteristics of carbonaceous materials using X-ray diffraction. 7. Analysis of carbonaceous materials using SEM. 8. Determination of crystallite size at carbonaceous and clay materials.
