Classification and characterization of the layered silicates (phyllosilicates).
Modification procedures of phyllosilicates used for the nanosilicates preparation.
Methods applied for the characterization of original and modified materials.
Prediction of procedures and new silicate nanomaterials for their further application.

Summary
Knowledge about crystal structure and chemistry of phyllosilicates are necessary to make proper modification for preparation of nanoparticles, organo-silicates, nanomaterials with optical and antibacterial effects, and clay minerals exfoliated in polymers.

Subject syllabus:
1. Structure and crystal chemistry of silicates.
3. Layer charge, cation exchange in the interlayer, exfoliation, delamination,
intercalation.
4. Layered silicates and water in the interlayer space. Hydratation, dehydratatiion
and rehydratation.
5. Serpentine-kaolinite group. Structural ordering of kaolinites. Thermal change.
6. Halloysite.
7. Kaolinite and halloysite as clay nanofillers to polymers.
8. Talc-pyrophyllite group. Structure and modification for practical use.
9. Smectites. Cations exchange, modifications procedures.
10. Smectites as nanomaterials with specific properties.
11. Vermiculites. Thermal coversion of structure. Influence of acids on structure.
12. Vermiculite intercalation with metal compounds and their characteristics.
13. Organovermiculites. Preparation and characterization.
14. Clay minerals-polymers nanocomposites.
