Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The primary aim of this course is to make students acquainted with principles of biogenic structures formation and to use these principles in development and optimization of new materials and systems. Students should be introduced to interdisciplinary fields and should recognize their importance and specifics – particularly in orientation in areas dealing with non-engineering and life-sciences such as bionanotechnology and biomimetics. This course in its some aspects is supplemental to „Molecular biology for nanotechnologists“.

Summary

Students will be introduced to interesting interdisciplinary science topics as bionanotechnology and biomimetics and fundamentals of biomineralization. Biomimetics is a discipline studying the structure and function of biological systems as models for the design and engineering of new functional materials, systems and machines. There is an enormous inspiration for nanotechnologists in nature and the potential of organisms and natural structures in the design and development of new materials is not yet exploited completely. Biological systems produce numerous materials with exceptional mechanical, optical or magnetic properties. Nature is a specialist on nanotechnology, even though we may assess its subtlety thanks to more and more precise microscope techniques until recently. The differences between “nature-made” and “man-made” materials will be pointed out.

Subject syllabus:

Studenti budou v tomto předmětu uvedeni do zajímavých interdisciplinárních oborů -biotechnologie, biomineralizace a biomimetiky. Procesy odehrávající se po tisíciletí v přírodě jsou obrovskou inspirací právě pro nanotechnology a potenciál živých organismů při přípravě nových progresivních materiálů a kompozitů není dosud zdaleka odhalen. Biologické systémy vytvářejí nespočet krystalických materiálů s výjimečnými mechanickými, optickými a magnetickými vlastnostmi. V přednáškách bude zdůrazněn rozdíl mezi inženýrsky připravovanými materiály a strukturami vyvinutými živými organismy mimo jiné z hlediska ekonomické náročnosti s jakou biologické systémy komplexně řeší problémy v designu a funkčnosti anorganických struktur.
